The other night while putting my little girls to bed, one of them told me that for Christmas this year she wanted a night light for her room. I don't think she realized when she told me that she was giving me a great idea for my new note this week. So why would someone want a night light? Well, light is reassuring. It allows us to function.  Lighting soothes, it relaxes, it guides the way. We rely unthinkingly on lighting for efficiency, safety, and security in nearly every aspect of our lives. All it takes is a blown fuse or an outage for us to realize how lost we would be without it. The following is an excerpt from a book titled "Lighting: A Design Source Book" by Elizabeth Wilhide and Ray Main. It's a very interesting read, especially for anyone in the process of building or remodeling. I highly recommend it:

Good lighting makes all the difference between a room that is bland and dull and one that is sparkling with life. It can soothe and relax, create intimacy points of interest, heighten atmosphere, and enhance decoration. In short, lighting can transform your home at the flick of a switch.       Everyone accepts the practical importance of lighting, but few appreciate its creative potential. Choice of lighting is often one of the last decisions made when decorating or designing a room, when, in fact, it ought to be one of the very first. Treating lighting as an afterthought can limit the options unnecessarily, or even cause disruption and additional cost. But even within an existing plan, it is easy to overlook those simple, inexpensive alterations that can vastly improve our perception of space.
